Are Indians too violent?

The reason why I am writing this is because I had one of those realization moments when I was watching an interview.

The interview was of Jensen Ackles (Dean from Supernatural) and the interviewer asked him whether he lets his 3 year old daughter watch his show. He straight up said "NO WAY" because the show has too much violence. He only lets her watch the light scenes of him and his co-star talking.

Now, it is a known fact that most Indian movies and shows (Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam etc) are full of violence. Fight scenes, murders, flying cars etc you name it. And we don't really stop our kids from watching these. In fact, we watch it together with them.

Indians are often labelled as being violent and I can't say it's completely untrue. Violence doesn't necessarily mean a mass murder or extensive abuse, it also means raising your hands to slap your husband/wife/kid/dog.

There are about a hundred researches done that shows that the best time to sculpt your kid's attitude is when they are young,OBVIOUSLY. Most of the parents I know do a great job at that too. They teach them good values, manners, tell them the right ways to do things and so on. They even control what their kids do online, they monitor what they watch online.

However, when it comes to violence-related movies or shows, they seem to be okay with it. Maybe because it is a norm that every Indian movie would be have a couple of fight scenes in it and we have all got so used to it which made us unaware of how it might be affecting our children? When I watched Jensen's interview, I realised how important it is to them to keep their children away from videos promoting violence.

Logically speaking, if a person has never seen a slap or received one, when they grow up they wouldn't even know what a slap is or how a slap is performed. True? I am not saying that you should lock up your kid in a dungeon until they are in their teen age in order to protect them from all the bad things that are shown in the media. No, that's stupid.

What I am trying to say is that exposure to violence at such a young age should be prohibited and as the kid gets older, the parents should slowly teach them the right and wrong. I am not saying this as an experienced parent (which I obviously am not) but I am indeed an experienced daughter (been one for 22 years) and I can say with much assurance that most of the bad things I know were obtained from media but my parents raised me well enough to know the right from wrong.

You see, Indian movies can never stray away from their fight sequences (how else will we know the hero is strong and almighty?). It comes down to us to make sure our children are not influenced by that and end up giving us the back-kick. Yes, entertainment is important but a healthy-minded generation is even more important. Let's raise a better generation than us, it's our responsibility.

Not to forget that Indian movies also come with a bucket-load of moral values which will also help you kid become a better person. It's all up to you to make sure your kid gets the good stuff and throw away the nasty bits.

That is my opinion. Leave me your thoughts in the comments below( you can even comment anonymously). Remember that constructive criticism is important. Do share this to spread a word on violence in media. Can be done easily by clicking the icons below.
